How It Works

How the Diabetes Buddies program works

1. Community Outreach and Engagement

At Diabetes Buddies we find and recruit T1D children and their families, and adult volunteers, in order to connect them for potential mentorship opportunities. We work with members of the Type 1 Diabetes community to reach as many families as possible, including:

  • Social workers
  • Healthcare providers
  • Medical institutions
  • Diabetes medical device companies
  • T1D non-profits
  • Camps
  • Schools

2. Partnering with BBBS Agencies

All prospective child Buddies (ages 6-18) and adult Buddies (21+) are referred to a local Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) agency for background checks, interviews, and compatibility assessments.

3. Matchmaking and Support

Diabetes Buddies maintains continuous communication with BBBS partners to monitor match progress, address challenges, and collect feedback.

BBBS conducts the formal matching process, pairing child and adult based on shared interests, age range, and chemistry.

4. Ongoing Engagement

Diabetes Buddies partners with the BBBS chapters to celebrate milestones and continue to help those within their T1D community.
